Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform technical supervision and management work in administering and enforcing the National Electrical Code and the City of Montgomery Electric Code, ordinances and accepted standards relating to electrical system and equipment installation for special projects. Also involved is the maintenance of technical standards with regard to adherence to established codes and regulations, quality of materials and workmanship, and safety precautions throughout the City and police jurisdiction. Work responsibilities are: reviews proposed cable television systems installations and specifications; acts as liaison to the electrical utility companies; plans, coordinates and inspects the work of subordinates and contractors; designs and inspects new electrical systems and upgrades of existing electrical systems; and performs departmental administrative duties and referred tasks  Decisions involving technical matters are usually made independently, but matters of departmental policy are subject to review by the Chief Building Official.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D.  Ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience as an Electrical Engineer or a Chief Electrical Inspector or a combination of education and experience. Must have a Master Electrician Certificate with the State of Alabama.

 

NOTE:  Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.


 

 

Special Requirements

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to obtain a valid Alabama Driver’s License to operate a city vehicle. Physical ability to work outdoors while being exposed to inclement weather conditions such as heat and cold.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Physical ability to walk, stoop, bend, crawl, climb ladders or stairs as needed to perform inspection duties.
