This is
difficult and varied stenographic and general clerical or secretarial work. The
main responsibility in this work is for the performance of difficult and varied
clerical work; however, employees must also take and transcribe dictation at a
working rate of speed. Employees keep complex clerical records and may perform
office management details designated by a supervisor. The nature of the work is
such that employees frequently have considerable independence of action in the
disposition of routine work matters and in receiving complaints, giving
information and other public contact work. Routine correspondence is prepared
and mailed under personal signature or employee may be authorized to sign
supervisor’s name to general correspondence. Supervisor usually makes only an
occasional review of work methods or results and gives general instructions on
assignments through conference, although more important or unusual assignments
may involve careful instruction and supervisory review. When necessary,
employees in this class may be deputized as a means of giving effect to legal
procedures. Supervision may be exercised over a few employees assisting in
routine details.
