Summary Statement

The class incumbent reports primarily to the Chief of IT for technology issues and the Warden for security and emergency issues. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining the security sensor system that detects escape attempts or penetrations by intruders of the correctional facilities perimeter fence. Work involves training and directing control room Correctional Officers responsible for operating and monitoring the alarm system, repairing or replacing inoperative computer equipment, performing preventive maintenance on system components including electronic circuits, fiber-optic and camera systems and monitoring the cost of system repair and maintenance. The class incumbent will also assist in general facility support of Cisco phones, the Wi-Fi infrastructure, and workstations and printers.  The class incumbent determines which security operations should be utilized during system failure, establishes system security requirements and takes required steps to initiate repairs and maintenance to ensure ongoing system integrity

Essential Functions

  • Assigns, reviews, and evaluates the work of security staff involved in operating computerized alarm to insure penetrations or attempted escapes are detected.
     
  • Performs maintenance on electronic sensors and equipment by trouble shooting all electronic circuits and PC boards, fiber optic and camera systems to maintain security system operations.
     
  • Trains Correctional Officers assigned to control rooms and towers on system operation.
     
  • Maintains alarm logs and incident reports of areas being tampered with by inmates.
     
  • Completes requisition forms to request system parts and maintains inventory of bench stock.
     
  • Performs routine fence inspections to ensure proper operation.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Correctional Officer/Electronics Technician
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. At least 19 1/2 years of age.
  2. Six months experience in electronics.
  3. Six months experience in electronics testing and troubleshooting.
  4. Six months experience in narrative report writing.
  5. Knowledge of budget management and control which includes managing a budget for the purpose of keeping expenditures within the limitations of available appropriations and available revenue and maintaining, monitoring, projecting and controlling a budget within set policies and procedures.
  6. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Additional Posting Information

Applicants may only apply if they are current permanent employees of the State of Delaware Department of Correction in a position covered by the Merit System who have completed their initial probationary period.

Employees in a  qualifying Correctional Officer (CO) series position will be eligible to retire after completing twenty-five (25) years of pension creditable State service, with at least twenty (20) of those years of pension creditable service in a CO series classified position at the time of retirement.

Appointees other than in-line promotions must successfully complete a Department training course in security and related areas prior to assignment.  This course is administered by the Department of Correction at the Employment Development Center.  Coursework includes physical, classroom and hands-on training.  Instruction is provided in the areas of inmate supervision, defensive tactics, riot control, weapons, report writing and emergency medical training.

Union:  As a condition of accepting employment, the person selected for this position shall join and pay dues to the labor organization or may, instead not join but pay a service fee no greater than the dues.  The labor organization has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other work related purposes.
