Summary Statement

An incumbent in this class is responsible for determining the correct classification of vehicles, collecting the corresponding toll, and giving change and receipts to customers of the Delaware toll roads.

Nature and Scope

An incumbent is responsible for determining the correct classification of vehicles entering the Delaware toll booths. This includes accurately recording each transaction into the toll system, collecting the prescribed toll, making change and giving receipts as required, properly recording and depositing all receipts. Toll collection also includes collection of toll tickets and handling special vehicle situations such as wide-loads, funeral processions, emergency medical vehicles, and military convoys. Work also includes explaining available toll programs to interested motorists and toll policies when responding to complaints.

  • Determines vehicle classifications by number of axles, determines appropriate toll charge, enters vehicle classification and toll charge into toll system, collects tolls, makes change and gives receipts as required.
     
  • Serves as key informational resource in advising customers about available toll programs.
     
  • Accounts for all cash and ticket receipts and makes bank deposits to include filling out appropriate bank and Delaware toll forms.
     
  • May assist motorists who are in distress, need directions, or locations of motels, restaurants, gas stations, etc.
     

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and denominations of various United States and Canadian currency.
  • Knowledge of vehicle types and classification such as passenger cars, trucks, tractor-trailers, etc.
  • Skill in cash-accounting and basic first aid techniques.
  • Ability to work under adverse conditions including extremes of temperature and weather, hostile and sometimes irate motorists, and vehicle exhaust fumes.
  • Ability to explain the various toll programs available to customers.
  • Ability to explain toll policies and procedures.
  • Ability to handle a high volume of transactions, quickly and accurately.

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Knowledge of customer service such as providing prompt, accurate, and courteous service to customers seeking information, answering requests as quickly as possible, ensuring customers are satisfied with service, and responding to complaints.
  2. Knowledge of working with money and making change.
  3. Knowledge of math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, or decimals.
  4. Knowledge of using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
