Introduction

The CT Fisheries Division –Conservation Biology Project as part of Fisheries Management Programs is conducting an evaluation of potential rearing habitats for several freshwater fish species listed by the State of Connecticut. This is a limited duration investigation to be conducted during the summer of 2018.  

This Seasonal Resource Assistant opportunity will be a team lead. Primary duties will be collection, compilation and analysis of field data for a series of ponds in Central Connecticut and coordination with others who will be assisting with field data collections.  The ideal candidate would collect fish population samples, delineate aquatic plants occurrences, conduct basic water chemistry and prepared basic GIS coverages. Field work will be rain or shine.

Duration of Position: The field work will occur between June and October. Length of employment will run for 10 weeks (approximately 350 hours) from the date of hire. Seasonal Resource Assistants will work out of Fisheries Division’s office located in Marlborough. Scheduling of days and hours you work may be highly variable from week to week, and flexibility in scheduling might be necessary with very short notice of schedule changes. Some night work may be required and should be expected. 

The pay rate is $14.00 per hour.  There are no benefits or paid holidays.

The selected candidate must have a valid driver’s license and an excellent driving record.

The selected candidate must be fluent in English and be at least 18 years old. 

The selected candidate must possess and maintain adequate physical flexibility, strength and stamina to perform the duties (including work outside in inclement weather, work outside for extended periods), and work well with other staff and members of the public.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Preparation of a report summarizing the findings of the pond evaluations.

May be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of fisheries field activities including boat electrofishing, stream electrofishing, setting and retrieving a variety of nets for fish collection.

To effectively complete your field duties, you will need to be or become proficient in identifying common freshwater fish species, operating small boats by yourself, identifying and mapping freshwater aquatic plants.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Ability to follow instructions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate would have graduate level course work and/or experience in one or more of the following: fisheries management and biology, aquatic biology, ecology, conservation biology or environmental science.

Experience with small boats and training in basic statistics and ARCGIS is preferred. Applicants should have a background and strong interest in conservation and ecology and be comfortable working independently.  

The successful candidate would have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision will be necessary.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in these classes who are assigned as patrol persons or supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.

2. Incumbents in these classes may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:

a. Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.

b. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.

c. College training in a specific field.

d. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities.

3. Incumbents performing patrol officer functions must currently possess Police Officer Standard Training (POST) certification or be eligible for POST recertification without completing the Basic Training program again (i.e. must be current or retired within two (2) years of last POST certified required employment) or Connecticut State Police (CSP) Academy certification (must be current or retired within two (2) years of last CSP certified required employment). Must pass a seasonal patroller training course as approved by the Connecticut State Police.

4. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.

2. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
