Introduction

The Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services seeks qualified individuals for the position of REHABILITATION THERAPY ASSISTANT 2 within the Administrative & Support Services Division.  POSITION # CV 25570.  This position is located in PAGE HALL, PHYSICAL THERAPY at Connecticut Valley Hospital, Middletown, CT  06457.  This is a full-time, thirty-seven and one half  (37.50)  hours per week position.  The Schedule is, as follows:  Monday thru Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

This position will be responsible for the following duties to include, but not limited to: Repair and recondition, and clean physical therapy equipment/supplies/area. Monitor equipment on the patient units and repair or replace any broken/malfunctioning equipment. Provide equipment to patient units as indicated. Complete daily equipment monitoring and other scheduled cleaning in the department to maintain survey readiness.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state facility or institution this class is accountable for implementing at a paraprofessional level treatment plans designed by a professional therapist to improve or correct disorders in the mental, emotional or motor status of the patients and/or clients.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Works in a variety of rehabilitation services; implements rehabilitation activities; assists in planning rehabilitation activities and programs to improve or correct patient/client disorders; participates in interdisciplinary treatment teams; assumes some responsibility for training new employees and students; observes, reports and charts patient/client behavior or response; prepares records and reports; cleans areas and maintains equipment and supplies; may prepare treatment plans and screen patients/clients under supervision of a professional therapist; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of rehabilitation principles and practices; knowledge of physical and psychosocial disorders and their relationship to therapeutic techniques; knowledge of individual and group dynamics; knowledge of therapy equipment and supplies including proper care and maintenance; considerable interpersonal skills; ability to encourage, instruct and work effectively with patients and/or clients; ability in one or more art forms or crafts applicable to therapy program; ability to carry out instructions; ability to observe, report and chart patient/client behavior or response; ability to discern program results.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of experience working with patients and/or clients exhibiting mental, emotional, or motor status disorders.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of the General Experience must have been as a Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant 1 or its equivalent.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

1. An Associate's Degree in a recognized therapeutic discipline may be substituted for the General and Special Experience.
2. College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience. In this case the Special Requirement must still be met.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and maintain a current certification as a Water Safety Instructor (WSI), Red Cross Advanced Life Saving and/or in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to be bilingual or fluent in American Sign Language.
3. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain patients and/or clients and may have some exposure to moderately disagreeable conditions, infectious and/or communicable diseases and risk of injury from assaultive and/or abusive patients and/or clients.
