Introduction

The DEEP Bureau of Natural Resources, Fisheries Division's Warm and Cold Water Fisheries Management Programs conduct a variety of projects dealing with freshwater fisheries management in Connecticut.

The Fisheries Division is seeking to hire multiple Seasonal Resource Assistants who will represent DEEP Fisheries and work out of the Fisheries Division’s office located in Marlborough.

As part of our team, you’d be participating in a variety of fisheries field activities including boat electrofishing, stream electrofishing, setting and retrieving a variety of nets for fish collection, and collecting water samples. You’ll also be required to conduct angler surveys, during which you’ll need to travel to a lake or river and interview anglers.

To effectively complete your field duties, you will need to quickly become proficient in identifying common freshwater fish species, as well as trailering and operating small boats by yourself. Field work will be rain or shine as we often work in inclement weather.

Duration of Position: Three distinct hiring phases will occur between March and May. Length of employment typically runs for 6 months from your date of hire.

Pay rate: $10.10 - 14.00 per hour depending on education and experience. There are no benefits.

As the season progresses, the days and hours you work will be highly variable from week to week, and you will often have very short notice of your upcoming schedule. Weekend and night work is required and should be expected on a regular basis.

To be an effective seasonal resource assistant, you’ll need to be dependable, a quick learner, effective at working independently with minimal oversight, and also effective at working as a member of a team.

Must have a valid driver’s license and an excellent driving record.

Selection Plan

These positions are non-competitive. Open to the public.

Selected candidates must be fluent in English.

Must be at least 18 years old.

Must possess and maintain adequate physical flexibility, strength and stamina to perform the duties (including work outside in inclement weather, work outside for extended periods), and work well with other staff and members of the public.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Besides fisheries field activities including boat electrofishing, stream electrofishing, setting and retrieving a variety of nets for fish collection, collecting water samples and conducting angler surveys, there will be office duties which include processing scale samples, data entry, carpentry, mechanical repair, office cleaning, grounds maintenance and other tasks.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Ability to follow instructions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

College level course work and/or experience in one or more of the following: fisheries management, fisheries biology, aquatic biology, ecology, or environmental science.

Experience in angling, boating (paddle craft and motorized vessels) and public speaking.

Background and strong interest in fisheries and the outdoors.

Comfortable working independently as well as with a group and dealing with the public.  

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in these classes who are assigned as patrol persons or supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.

2. Incumbents in these classes may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:

a. Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.

b. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.

c. College training in a specific field.

d. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities.

3. Incumbents performing patrol officer functions must currently possess Police Officer Standard Training (POST) certification or be eligible for POST recertification without completing the Basic Training program again (i.e. must be current or retired within two (2) years of last POST certified required employment) or Connecticut State Police (CSP) Academy certification (must be current or retired within two (2) years of last CSP certified required employment). Must pass a seasonal patroller training course as approved by the Connecticut State Police.

4. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.

2. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
