Environmental Intern (35 Hour)

Introduction

Within the Department of Public Health (DPH), the Drinking Water Section (DWS) is responsible for developing, implementing, and enforcing state and federal regulations that ensure drinking water safety, quality, and adequacy is maintained for approximately 2,600 public drinking water systems. This Environmental Intern will support the DWS’ Source Assessment and Protection Unit.

The Source Assessment and Protection Unit is responsible for statewide water supply planning, water company land permitting, water resource planning, determining well site suitability, and conducting source protection investigations.

This Environmental Intern position is a permanent, full-time position and has a target class of Environmental Analyst 1 upon successful completion of a training program. The starting salary for this position for a new state employee with a Bachelor's degree is $40,939. The starting salary for this position for a new state employee with a Master's degree is $42,416. For current state employees, compensation will be in accordance with guidelines for computing salary adjustments set forth by the Department of Administrative Services, Determining Salary Upon Change in Class manual.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency receives training in introductory professional environmental work for the development of technical and professional skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement to the professional environmental work of the agency; performs a wide variety of increasing difficult duties as technical skills are acquired during the course of the training period.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Some knowledge of basic theories, principles and practices of environmental and policy analysis; some knowledge of basic statistics; general knowledge of environmental program planning principles and practices; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; analytical skills; research and organizational skills; ability to understand and interpret legislation and technical data; ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

A Bachelor's or Master's degree in a scientific or technical discipline related to the environmental field including but not limited to the biological, earth, or physical sciences; environmental planning; environmental law; leisure services; geographic information systems; geography with a concentration in geographic information systems; environmental or natural sciences; or natural resources.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• At a minimum, a bachelor’s degree in a scientific or technical discipline related to the environmental field including but not limited to the biological, hydrological, earth, or physical sciences; environmental planning; environmental engineering; environmental law; environmental or natural sciences; land use; or natural resources;
• Experience with data collection, technical analysis and interpretation; also, experience utilizing knowledge of concepts or policies pertaining to environmental protection, public health, stormwater, water resource protection, drinking water protection, green infrastructure, and/or smart growth;
• Work or academic experience in drinking water treatment, drinking water distribution systems, water quality, field investigations, land use planning, water resource planning or source water protection;
• Experience using ArcGIS and MS Excel; along with work or academic experience with technical writing;
• Experience and involvement with committees, boards, workgroups, and/or commissions; participation in public forums.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some danger of injury or physical harm from on site environments and moderate degree of discomfort from exposure to year round weather conditions.
