Introduction

DRS is currently recruiting for one (1) Mail Handler Trainee. This position will be responsible for receiving on-the-job training in the receipt, processing and distribution of mail. The position will be located in the Hartford office of DRS at 450 Columbus Boulevard. The target class for this trainee position is a Mail Handler.

This is a full-time, 37.5 hours per week position, with the scheduled hours 5:30 am - 1:30 pm, Monday - Friday.

Qualified current State employees being considered for further steps in the hiring process wil be required to submit their last two performance appraisals while qualified non-state employees being considered for further steps in the hiring process will be required to submit three professional supervisory letters of reference.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for receiving on-the-job training in the receipt, processing and distribution of mail.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Receives training to perform tasks as outlined in the specification for the class of Mail Handler; sorts, distributes and routes incoming and interoffice mail; weighs and operates automatic postage application equipment, scales, mail inserters and related mail equipment; loads and unloads mail vehicles, tray sacks or carts of mail; picks up and delivers mail; may be required to open and inspect mail; may sign for mail; may drive State vehicles; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Some interpersonal skills; some oral and written communication skills; ability to follow oral and written instructions; some mechanical ability; ability to perform basic arithmetic computations; some ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any experience and training which would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Some oral and interpersonal skills, computer skills and ability to follow oral and written instruction is preferred.  

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
2. A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights.
