PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Office of the State Fire Marshal this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the certification and inspection program for demolition contractors and the licensure and inspection program for crane operations and registration.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the State Fire Marshal or other administrative employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises clerical staff or other lower employees as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

DEMOLITION
  • Conducts field inspections of demolition sites to ensure conformance with state codes; 
  • Checks for certification; 
  • Provides technical assistance to local officials and assists them in enforcing demolition codes; 
  • Investigates complaints; 
  • Gathers information and writes reports; 
  • Testifies at hearings and in court; 
  • Performs related duties as required.
CRANE OPERATIONS
  • Administers crane operation licensing program; 
  • Reviews applications; 
  • Administers written examination; 
  • Conducts and evaluates practical examinations for crane operators; 
  • Serves as administrative staff to Crane Board; 
  • Inspects work sites for crane operator licenses; 
  • Investigates, along with federal OSHA agents, accidents involving a crane where there is bodily injury or substantial monetary damage; 
  • Gathers information and writes reports; 
  • Testifies at hearings and in court; 
  • Assigns and reviews work of clerical staff; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • mechanical and explosive demolition procedures; 
    • crane operations and maintenance;  
    • relevant state laws and regulations;  
  • Skills
    • interpersonal skills;  
    • oral and written communication skills;  
  • Ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of experience as a supervisor for a large demolition company OR as a certified Class A demolition contractor including extensive experience in crane operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

A crane operator's license may be substituted for the experience in crane operations only.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
