PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In state facilities this class is accountable for supervising all habilitation/rehabilitation therapy activities in a small to medium sized facility or institution, including, but not limited to physical therapy, occupational therapy, rehabilitation therapy, and communication therapy programs.

GUIDELINES FOR JOB CLASS USE

  • In a major operating unit of a large institution this class supervises all therapy areas in a unit which has professional therapists in two or more therapy areas. Therapy areas are defined exclusively as Rehabilitation Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Communication Therapy.
  • In a large facility, this class may act as the assistant to the Director of Rehabilitation Therapies, assisting the Director in supervising all facility habilitation/rehabilitation activities.
  • In a small or medium size facility, in the absence of a Director of Rehabilitation Therapies, this class supervises at least two therapy areas, each having a filled professional therapist position. Therapy areas are defined exclusively as above. Each small or medium sized facility shall be limited to one Rehabilitation Therapy Supervisor 2.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general direction from a Director of Rehabilitation Therapies or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises professional therapists in at least two therapy areas as defined above; may also supervise Rehabilitation Therapy Assistants and/or other paraprofessional students or interns.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Supervises, plans, directs, evaluates and oversees implementation of rehabilitation/habilitation programs;
  • Develops diagnostic tools and administrative policies and procedures for application of a therapeutic function;
  • Supervises and instructs professional staff and intern therapists in new techniques and implementation of therapeutic procedures;
  • Supervises therapists and reviews their reports;
  • Provides inservice training;
  • Supervises individual or small group activities, conducts and/or participates in clinics and case conferences providing consultation to attending physician or other discipline representatives regarding individuals level of functioning, treatment plan and progress;
  • Makes referrals to other disciplines for further individual assessment;
  • Prepares and maintains reports of individuals diagnosis, treatment and progress;
  • Meets with other discipline and/or department heads to coordinate specific therapy programs with other programs in facility;
  • Maintains and orders supplies and equipment;
  • Conducts rehabilitation therapy staff meetings to discuss clinical and administrative issues;
  • May act for Director of Rehabilitation Therapies in their absence;
  • May assess individuals and formulate treatment programs;
  • May maintain liaison with local and state agencies for continuance of habilitation/rehabilitation therapy upon individual discharge;
  • May make home visits;
  • May participate in ad hoc intradepartmental and interdepartmental committee meetings;
  • May represent rehabilitation therapy department by speaking to community groups;
  • May make or supervise making of adaptive equipment;
  • May act as Assistant Director of Therapies in a large facility;
  • May serve as a Qualified Intellectual Disability Professional;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • principles and practices of designated therapeutic disciplines;
    • physical and/or intellectual disorders;
  • Knowledge of
    • community services;
    • individual and group dynamics;
  • Considerable
    • interpersonal skills;
    • oral and written communication skills;
    • skill in instructing and supervising others in practice of several therapeutic disciplines;
  • Ability to plan, implement and evaluate therapeutic programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Seven (7) years of professional experience in a recognized professional therapeutic discipline providing program evaluation, planning and application for individuals with an intellectual disability and/or physical disabilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of the General Experience must have included either the supervision of professional therapists or programmatic and administrative responsibility for a therapy program.

NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted as one (1) year of experience at the level of a Rehabilitation Therapy Supervisor 1 or its equivalent.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in a recognized therapeutic discipline such as art, dance, horticulture, music, recreation or other related discipline may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
