PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state psychiatric facility this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor responsible for Nurse Clinicians and performing client/patient care activities as senior triage officer, clinical evaluator and/or psychotherapist.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general direction from a physician or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Leads Nurses, Head Nurses, Nurse Clinicians and other staff as assigned in psychotherapy, clinical evaluations or when acting as senior triage officer.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Coordinates program or unit workflow and determines priorities; 
  • Schedules, assigns and reviews work; 
  • Establishes and maintains unit or program procedures; 
  • Provides staff training and assistance; 
  • Conducts or assists in conducting performance evaluations; 
  • Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; 
  • Supervises psychiatric evaluations including taking of client/patient history, formulating of diagnostic conclusions and treatment plans and making appropriate dispositions; 
  • Performs initial client/patient assessments on an emergency or walk in basis with appropriate intervention or referral; 
  • Handles acute treatment or crisis intervention; 
  • Periodically contributes to clinical research or evaluation studies; 
  • Participates in nursing leadership activities to improve quality of practice and education; 
  • May prescribe medication; 
  • May make recommendations on policies or standards; 
  • May prepare reports and correspondence; 
  • May participate in interdisciplinary leadership committees; 
  • May perform individual, group or family therapy; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • principles and practices of psychiatric nursing and psychotherapeutic functions; 
    • current psychiatric rehabilitation concepts and methods; 
    • and ability to apply concepts of interpersonal and group dynamics; 
  • Considerable
    • interpersonal skills; 
    • oral and written communication skills; 
  • Considerable ability to facilitate interdisciplinary treatment approaches and collaboration; 
  • Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Six (6) years of experience as a registered professional nurse in a psychiatric setting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been at the level of a Nurse Clinician in a psychiatric setting performing individual, group and/or family therapy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

  • A Bachelor's degree in nursing may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience.
  • A Master's degree in nursing may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must possess and retain current license as a Registered Professional Nurse in Connecticut.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel within the state in the course of their daily work.
  • Within the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, incumbents in this class who write medications must have a current license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse issued by the Department of Public Health.
