PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Public Health public health service program area or distinctive public health promotion/intervention component this class is accountable for receiving training in community outreach techniques, assisting in health education/promotion campaigns and/or implementation of health intervention strategies and epidemiologic surveys.

GUIDELINES FOR JOB CLASS USE

This class is designed to be an entry level class covering the broad spectrum of work found in a public health agency. Incumbents in this class possessing minimal experience and training would be expected to develop through on the job training opportunities into paraprofessionals in a wide variety of work.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the close supervision of health care professionals and other technical and administrative staff; works more independently with acquired experience.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Under immediate supervision participates in collection of health data from patients, physicians and other sources of health information; 
  • Gains knowledge and experience of interviewing and investigatory techniques; 
  • Receives training in patient counseling and education; 
  • Receives training in development of health program informational initiatives including writing press releases; 
  • Provides information to local health departments and community action groups concerning health program initiative policies, services and procedures; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Evidence of basic aptitudes, attitudes and abilities which will provide solid foundation necessary to acquire knowledge and skills required for the work;
  • Ability to
    • establish and maintain cooperative relations with all those contacted in work environment; 
    • follow oral and written instructions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

High school graduation or equivalency or any experience and training which would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderately heavy loads.
