DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, to fabricate, modify or repair motor vehicle department tools and equipment using a blacksmith's forge, heating oven, trip hammer, grinders, hammers, tongs, and other tools of the trade; to do arc and acetylene welding, cutting, and brazing; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This position is located at the Niles Corporation Yard. Incumbents work assignments to fabricate, modify, or repair specific equipment which is received, in general terms, from the Heavy Equipment Shop Supervisor. The method of accomplishing any given task is left to the discretion of the incumbent.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Makes, modifies, or repairs hand tools, hammers, picks, mattocks, tongs, hooks, chains, scarifier teeth, pneumatic tool bits, weed burners, special purpose hoppers, and drums, disk grinders, berm moulds, dump truck beds, equipment trailers, and similar items.

2. Does all position arc and acetylene welding, includes cutting on steel, soft iron, copper, bronze, aluminum, brass, cast iron, and other metals.

3. Performs hard facing on bits, teeth, and blades for various construction equipment.

4. Cuts, welds, and threads steel pipe, up to six inches in diameter.

5. Uses coal forge, gas oven, Nazel air hammer, power saws, pipe threaders, machinist’s lathe, jigs, stakes, anvil, and hand tools.

6. Works from blueprints, sketches, drawings, and written specifications.

7. Maintains adequate stock of supplies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of an accredited apprenticeship in the blacksmith-welder trade.

License:

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

Knowledge of:

• Methods, materials, tools, and equipment of the blacksmith and welding trades.

Abilities:

• Skillfully using the tools and equipment of the trade, including arc and acetylene equipment.
• Laying out and planning work with a minimum of supervision.
• Working from blueprints and specifications.
• Supervising nonjourney-level workers.
• Reading Micrometers.
