DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, performs limited technical work in the field and/or office to assist with the creation, maintenance and update of the Alameda County Fire Department Geographic Information System (GIS) Site Plan Program; collects accurate and viable data in a timely fashion; performs a variety of work related to the maintenance of the GIS data for the site plan program; and, performs related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is a non-safety classification in the Alameda County Fire Department. Under the direction of the Fire Geographic Information Systems Analyst, performs GIS work to produce site plan maps and data. This classification is distinguished from the higher level classification of Geographic Information Systems Technician as the latter is responsible for a broader scope of responsibilities including database design and development of customized mapping solutions.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Travels throughout Alameda County to perform field data collection.
2. Prepares site plan maps and site plan map updates with the collected data.
3. Uses ArcGIS software to assist with the maintenance of a GIS site plan program, which includes updating the base map layer, and additional layers as specified.
4. Works with other departmental staff or building managers to coordinate site visits.
5. Assembles, organizes and digitizes information into the appropriate database.
6. Documents all work performed and adheres to quality control procedures.
7. Assists with the instruction of other staff in the use of software as it pertains to the site plan program.
8. Prepares a variety of correspondence, documentation and other written materials.
9. Assists with the preparation of cartographic layout and design of a variety of site plan maps.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:

Successful completion of 30 semester, or 45 quarter, units from an accredited college or university in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Geography, Environmental Studies, or a field related to the work.

OR

Experience:

The equivalent of one year of full-time experience in: mobile data collection, geographic information systems, cartography, automated map drafting, mechanical drawing, civil engineering, drafting or related field.

License:

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license and a satisfactory DMV record.

Special Requirements:

This position requires that candidates be able meet Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance standards.

• General GIS concepts and analytical techniques
• Principles and practices of mobile data collection techniques
• GIS software principles, methods and techniques, including applicable software such as ArcGIS
• Basic Global Positioning Systems (GPS) concepts and procedures.
• Modern office practices and procedures
• Use of standard office equipment.
